Dear Friend of the Cathedral
We are in the middle of celebrating or saying goodbye to various members of the community. Last Sunday we recognised Bob Coolidge, long time Cathedral member, on the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the Diaconate. This took place in the Diocese of Massachusetts in 1967, thirty-one years before the first ordination of a vocational deacon in this diocese.

The change of policy in Montreal took several years of sometimes heated discussion and a Symposium on the Diaconate held at Dio in 1994. Bob played an important role in these discussions as Peter Huish highlighted on Sunday. Peter said “Deacon Robert has been an influence one way or another in the development of the diaconate here, in the ordinations of all vocational deacons ordained in the Diocese since then, myself included, in the Diocesan Community of Deacons to this date, as a voice of advocacy for the diaconate which all our bishops have heard, and as the founder of the Montreal Fund for the Diaconate which has provided help to many in their diaconal formation.”

Tyson Røsberg will preach this Sunday and will then be sent on his way to a year’s internship in Paris with a blessing from the community. His duties as Concerts Manager will be taken over by Erica Jacobs-Perkins. Catherine St-Arnaud will continue to organise the Oasis concerts on Saturday afternoons.
Amanda Van Oort wants us all to know that between September 29 and October 1 – Friday evening to Sunday evening – the Cathedral will welcome the public to a range of events as part of Quebec’s Les Journées de la culture. Make sure you put these dates in your diary:

6pm-9pm: Showing of 3 terrific documentaries from the National Film Board. Two focus on Leonard Cohen and the third focuses on Expo 67
Saturday, September 30:
1:30 pm Come for an Organ Demonstration led by our Music Director Patrick Wedd!
2:00pm Create a work of art while in the company of a professional artist!
4:30 pm Listen to a special L’Oasis Musicale Concert created for the Journées de la Culture
6:30-8pm Be part of an additional special musical event on the theme “Heritage”
Sunday October 1:
4:00pm Choral Evensong followed by a Cream Tea on the Cathedral Forecourt (assuming there’s no construction there!)
5:45pm-7pm La Cathédrale, Le Soir-Come for the Cream Tea then stay for this monthly evening service blending contemporary worship styles with traditional liturgy and communion.Throughout the weekend you are invited to take yourself on a self-guided tour of the Cathedral, try out the scavenger hunt quiz, enjoy historic displays of Cathedral treasures and be amazed by a contemporary community

Diocesan pride mass: Sunday, August 13, 6:30 p.m. at the Cathedral.
Community day: Saturday, August 19, 11 am to 5 pm. Come volunteer at the Cathedral’s kiosque.
Pride parade: Sunday, August 20, 1 – 4 p.m.. Walk with Christ Church Cathedral to show your support for the LGBTQ community. Meet at the Cathedral at noon.
